Description
Product Description
Ma Tou Yan (Horse Head Peak) is one of the thirty-six famous peaks of the Wuyi Mountains, located south of Mei Yan. Its unique terrain and microclimate give rise to a Rougui (Cassia) oolong of exceptional character – one that stands out for its sharp, penetrating cassia-like spice and its remarkably smooth, sweet, and full-bodied texture. This “Yan Gu Ling Yun” selection is crafted from leaves grown in this very area, carrying the unmistakable “rock bone” essence that connoisseurs cherish.
Tasting Notes
| Aspect | Description |
|---|---|
| Dry Leaves | Tightly curled, stout, and well-twisted. Rich reddish-brown in colour with an oily, lustrous sheen. Clean and even in shape – a gentle sniff reveals subtle hints of creamy milkiness layered with cassia spice. |
| Aroma | Intensely aromatic with a sharp, spicy cassia note, underpinned by a warm, toasty fragrance from the charcoal roast. The aroma is bold and complex, evolving with each infusion. |
| Liquor | Bright orange-red, clear and brilliant. The tea is viscous and clings to the cup – a sign of fine texture. It displays a lively transparency with a golden-red glow. |
| Palate | Smooth and mellow on entry, with a pronounced cassia spiciness that is both sharp and refreshing. The mouthfeel is thick, silky, and deeply satisfying. A long, sweet aftertaste lingers, with a distinct mineral “rock rhyme” that defines true Wuyi terroir. |
| Infused Leaves | After steeping, the leaves unfurl to reveal a thick, plump, and resilient texture. They appear dark green with a glossy, vibrant sheen – soft, bright, and alive, proof of careful processing and high-quality raw material. |
| Endurance | Exceptional durability – this tea stands up to around 10 infusions, with the fragrance and flavour remaining remarkably intact even after multiple steeps. |
Brewing Recommendation
To fully capture the character of this charcoal-roasted Rougui, use boiling water (100°C / 212°F) and a gaiwan or purple clay pot. A standard gongfu session:
-
Tea: 8.5g (one individual pack)
-
Water: 120–150ml
-
Rinse the leaves briefly with boiling water and discard the rinse.
-
Steep for 3–5 seconds on the first infusion, gradually increasing the time by 3–5 seconds for each subsequent brew.
-
Enjoy the evolving spice and sweetness through up to 10 infusions.
