Aged Ban Zhang Ripe Pu’er: Time, Terroir, and Transformation

In the world of Pu’er, Ban Zhang is the undisputed king. Hailing from the mountainous region of Menghai in Yunnan, this tea is known for its bold, full-bodied character and incredible aging potential. Our 2005 Ban Zhang Imperial Ripe Pu’er is a shining example – nineteen years of careful cellar storage have transformed it into a masterpiece of mellow complexity.

The Art of Fermentation
Ripe Pu’er undergoes a controlled fermentation process called wodui, which mimics the natural aging of raw Pu’er and accelerates its development. The result is a dark, earthy tea with a smooth, sweet taste and no astringency. Ban Zhang material, with its thick, robust leaves, produces a particularly rich and substantial brew.

Tasting the Years
This 2005 vintage pours a deep ruby-red liquor, bright and clear like polished agate. The aroma is a symphony of aged notes – medicinal herbs, dark wood, and a hint of dried fruit. On the palate, it is silky and thick, coating the mouth with a warming, sweet complexity that lingers. The finish is long and clean, with a gentle, saliva-inducing sweetness that invites another sip.

Brewing Wisdom
Aged ripe Pu’er benefits from a thorough rinse with boiling water to wake up the leaves. Then, steep for 8–10 seconds in a Yixing pot or gaiwan, and increase time with each subsequent infusion. This tea can easily handle 12–15 infusions, making it perfect for a long, leisurely session.

More Than a Tea
Drinking aged Ban Zhang is like tasting history. Each cup carries the essence of the mountains, the skill of the artisans, and the patience of time. It is a tea that connects us to the land and to the past – a truly profound experience for any tea lover.
